Realistic Tattoos

A realistic tattoo recreates a photograph or a three-dimensional texture on the skin. Portraits, sculptural textures and the cinematic female figures of the Chicano school are the standout examples of this style.

With this technique, the result depends entirely on the artist's shading skill. A well-done realistic piece stays sharp for years; at a hastily chosen studio, the same design can blur within a few years.

Things to know about Realistic Tattoos

Reference quality

The clearer the reference image, the better a realistic piece turns out. Bring a high-resolution, well-lit reference.

Size is critical

Realistic detail doesn't survive at small sizes. For portraits and statue work, plan on at least the size of your palm.

Portfolio, portfolio

Ask for photos of the studio's healed (at least a year old) realistic work; every tattoo looks good when it's fresh.

Undecided? Try it first, then get quotes
